A key part of Hankook’s focus at the 2017 CV Show was the UK launch of the new SmartTouring AL22 coach tyre designed for long- distance travel in the European market. Hankook are expecting that long-distance coach travel with grow in significance, and that there will be an increase in demand for high-
comfort as well as straight driving performance. The characteristics of the SmartTouring AL22 not only allow maximum travel comfort for passengers, they also maximise driving and handling comfort for the driver on long-distance trips.”
The carcass contour of the SmartTouring AL22 ensures the best
suspension properties and contributes to a particularly safe driving style. The longitudinal 5- rib profile with its closed, solid central rib makes for good straight driving performance. Multi-3D sipes guarantee both good traction and brake responsiveness.
The new bead area delivers rim joint stiffness, resulting in improved concentricity and travel comfort. The individual belt layers of the tyre are structurally arranged in such a way that less heat is developed in operation compared with conventional tyres. This effect reduces rolling resistance, thus economising on fuel, but it also extends the tyre’s life.
Fuel savings through reduced heat development have been achieved
not only by the belt structure, but additionally by the tread compound used for the Hankook SmartTouring AL22. Specific soot molecules with a larger volume and a stable structure are used for the basic tread rubber, leading to a reduction in energy loss during movement. These highly

technology coach tyres. The Hankook SmartTouring AL22 can be used on all axle positions and provides maximum ride and rolling comfort, decent concentricity, low rolling noise, optimised rolling resistance and low wear for particularly efficient travel.

The tyre will be available in sizes 295/80R22.5 and 315/80R22.5 from June 2017 and is suitable for long-distance coach wheels in all axle positions. Klaus Krause, Vice President and Head of the European Development Centre in Hanover, added: “During development of the SmartTouring line, we focused particularly on ride and rolling
structured carbon molecules also guarantee enhanced abrasion resistance and, in combination with the other technologies, help to increase the mileage of the tyre. The product’s special brake structure and newly developed bead area have also combined to give the tyre high retreadability.
As part of Hankook’s presence at the Commercial Vehicle Show, the Korean tyre manufacturer presented the SmartFlex all-weather tyre line for medium and long haul trips, which were headlined by the all-season SmartFlex TH31 trailer tyre for medium and long haul trips.
The SmartFlex TH31 celebrated its premiere at the 66th IAA for Commercial Vehicles last year. Its wide, closed shoulder area supports stable straight driving, ensures good lateral stability and even wear. Chamfered tread grooves help prevent splintering. The tyre is characterised by four main tread grooves that ensure optimum water displacement.
The SmartFlex range also includes the AH31 and DH31, which are steering axle and drive axle tyres respectively. Both tyres have M+S marking and the snowflake (3PMSF) symbol. This means that the tyres have good traction, even if drivers encounter wintry conditions. The AH31 has an
extra-wide open shoulder area that supports a high mileage and traction as well as good handling properties. Its read wear equaliser stepper technology also gives it stability on profile blocks and reduces uneven wear. The Hankook SmartFlex DH31 has a 6-rib tread with special hexagonal tread blocks that guarantee even wear behaviour and thus a longer tyre service life. Hankook’s patented self-cleaning sipes in the middle of each block prevent damage to the block edges and deliver better traction through the life of the tyre.
Whilst the SmartFlex AH31 and SmartFlex DH31 are designated mainly for larger wheel sizes in the 22.5 inch range, the SmartFlex AH35 and its drive axle counterpart SmartFlex DH35 is more targeted for smaller wheels with 17.5/19.5 inch sizes.
