Continental Develop EfficientPro and LightPro Lines in Line with EU Directive
Contentinal are supporting vehicle manufacturers in their efforts to comply with the 2012 EU Energy Efficiency Directive that stipulates how the fuel efficiency of trucks must be increased by 20% by 2020.

sensitivity of this transport segment, lighter tyres deliver gains in load capacity, and with this lower dead tyre weight, the tankers can therefore transport more liquid without exceeding the permissible total weight. Fitted on all axles, the Conti LightPro tyres reduce the vehicle's total weight by around 80 kg compared with tyres from the Conti hybrid line. A 40-tonne tanker used for liquid transportation with an annual mileage of 75,000 miles increases cost-effectiveness by up to £770 yearly, over the tyre’s service life, due to the improved load capacity and fuel efficiency. With tankers, even further weight
savings can be achieved if the Conti LightPro tyres are fitted with Continental’s weight-reduced air springs. The injection-moulded pistons further increase load capacity by about 12 kilograms on each axle. Compared with conventional steel pistons, the use of a special plastic reduces weight by up to 75%. The design offers enhanced ride comfort and allows for simple installation in the vehicle. Increased vehicle resale value is delivered by the highly corrosion- resistant and durable lightweight air springs, which are already being used as original equipment in tankers.
The Conti LightPro Tyres reduce the total weight of tanker used for liquid transporation by approximately 80 kg.
At the IAA in Hanover, Continental unveiled the rolling-resistance optimised Conti EfficientPro and weight-reduced Conti LightPro tyres exclusively for use on tankers in mineral oil transportation.
The Conti EfficientPro line for the steer and drive axle, has been specially developed for long- distance motorway transportation. It has also been given the EU label “A” rating for maximum fuel efficiency for both sterring and drive axle
EcoPlus on the trailer show that the tyres can achieve fuel savings of up to 0.64 litres over 62 miles compared with Conti EcoPlus tyres, highlighting their reduced rolling resistance. Further to this, with an annual mileage of 75,000 miles, the Conti EfficientPro tyres for the steer and drive axle can save around 750 litres of fuel a year, equating to 2 tonne reduction in CO2 emissions over the course of a year. The Conti EfficientPro will be used in the
In 2013, Continental pushed the door ajar for intelligent tyres following the launch of the ContiPressureCheck tyre pressure monitoring system, but now the door has been fully opened through the introduction of a digital tyre check solution namely, the company’s iTyre range. ContiPressureCheck sensors, used for measuring tyre pressure and temperature, are pre-installed in the tyres at the factory, saving fleet operators installation time and mounting costs. Continental ensure that the sensors are correctly installed and positioned within the tyres. Currently, 22 of the major tyre sizes across its main truck and bus tyre bands including EcoPlus, Hybrid, Urban, CityPlus, Coach and Urban Scandanavia are available as iTyres.
Data measured inside the tyres is continuously recorded and displayed to the driver on a screen. If the tyre pressure deviates from
the target value, ContiPressureCheck alerts the driver immediately, allowing immediate measures to be taken to resolve the problem and return the tyre pressure to its normal value. Additionally, the ContiPressureCheck system is compatible with a range of telematics systems, meaning that tyre pressure and temperature data is viewed on an integrated display and transmitted to external devices. This delivers transparency for fleets and improved tyre management. The ContiPressureCheck system also helps to reduce fuel consumption and tyre wear, thereby increasing mileage. The increased fuel efficiency of trucks and the longer service life of their tyres minimises operating costs. ContiPressureCheck aids improved sustainability due to reduced CO2 emissions, while optimum tyre pressure enhances the safety of all road users.
tyres, thanks to the special rubber compounds for all of the components, the multi-layer design of the tyre tread and the rolling behaviour that reduces rolling resistance. Together with the Conti EcoPlus HT3 for the trailer axle, transport companies using Conti EfficientPro tyres can now equip semitrailer tractors on all axles with tyres certified to EU label “A”: the
original equipment sector and available during the first half of 2017 in the aftermarket sector. Moving onto the Conti LightPro tyre line available from early 2017 onwards, which is the first time the company has offered weight- reduced tyres developed for use on tankers for the transportation of liquids and, in particular, mineral oil. Bearing in mind the weight-
