Michelin solutions’ newly- launched EFFITRAILER telematics programme has now signed up paper and corrugated packaging producer DS Smith, with the system being fitted to 40 single- decker trailers. DS Smith is a major European manufacturer of recycled corrugated case materials and specialty papers, employing 2,200 people across 9 paper mills. The EFFITRAILER system is built upon the installation of dedicated trailer telematics equipment. This features a tyre pressure monitoring system, electronic braking system (EBS) data analysis and an on-board datalink. Once installed, the equipment also enables constant geolocation of ever y EFFITRAILER - optimised asset in a company’s fleet. The telematics system can be installed on all trailer types that are equipped with EBS, regardless of age or manufacturer, with the solution targeting fleets operating

In addition to this Abbey said that, “another key selling point for us is the system’s geolocation
data which, combined with its schedule-tracking tools, will allow us to improve fleet routing and efficiency over time.” Abbey complemented this by suggesting, “The EFFITRAILER system gives us confidence that trailer tyre- related downtime will continue to be minimised, and that our reputation for excellent customer service remains well-founded.” Michelin solutions commits to reducing the number of tyre- related trailer breakdowns by up to 50 per cent when a company signs up to an EFFITRAILER contract. The company says this is a unique commitment in the market and is validated following diagnosis by a Michelin solutions

Mark Abbey, General Manager, UK Logistics at DS Smith, stated that the EFFITRAILER system offered
a host of services which would help streamline their operations, boost efficiency, and cut tyre- related downtime. Abbey also added that the system’s real-time data reporting and analysis allowed the company to proactively spot and alleviate any tyre-related issues before they

EFFITRAILER telematics generates real-time data that is sent to a dedicated fleet manager’s web portal. This data details each asset’s mileage, exact location, the length of any periods of abnormal downtime or ‘wait-time’, the ‘unhooked’ or ‘towed’ status of the asset, whether the trailer is overloaded, as well as finally the current pressure and temperature of ever y tyre on ever y axle.
