It has taken seven long years of hard campaigning, but TYRED, with the continual help of the UK tyre industry, has finally managed to persuade The Department of Trade to take action and look at initial steps to ban tyres older than ten years from Buses, Coaches, Heavy Goods Vehicles and Minibuses, it was announced on 26th February.
Campaign Success for Frances Molloy
This is the significant breakthrough that Frances Molloy, leader of the Tyred Campaign, has been waiting and hoping for since her son Michael (18) was tragically killed with bus driver- Colin Daulby – 63 and Kerry Ogden (23) in 2012 on the A3 in Surrey returning from the Bestival Music Festival, when the Merseypride coach’s nineteen and half year old tyre exploded.
Transport Minister Jesse Norman confirmed that the Government will shortly be consulting on various options to ban tyres over ten years old and stated, “I want to pay tribute to Frances Molloy and her team at Tyred for their impressive campaign against older tyres on coaches and buses. Frances Molloy commented; “I recently received a call from Jesse Norman and former Transport Minister Chris Grayling to say that the consultations will now take place with the next anticipated step being the acceptance and commencement of legislation making the ban Law. Now I am extremely hopeful that we can work together with the Government to get this long overdue bill through Parliament as soon as possible. We are all very proud at Tyred to be able to effectively change the law in memory of Michael, Kerry and Colin.”
