As part of Motortec Madrid, Tratamiento de Neumáticos Usados (TNU) is organising “The European Retreading Industry in Danger: A Call to Action” debate on Thursday, April 24, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM, in the Auditorium of Pavilion 5, IFEMA, Motortec.
The European Retreading Industry in Danger: A Call to Action
The debate aims to highlight the urgency of the issue affecting the survival of the tyre retreading industry in Europe while exposing the challenges and viable solutions and strategies to revitalise the sector, which is crucial for sustainable mobility.
Over the past 20 years, the retreading sector declined by 52%, going from a production of 1,132,500 units to 540,850. The number of plants reduced from 46 to 19, with the sector generating approximately 25,000 jobs in Europe, many of them in rural areas.
The Benefits
Tyre retreading plays a fundamental role in the circular economy, extending tyre life and reducing waste generation and its environmental impact. It helps save resources, reducing raw material consumption by 70%, which further reduces the need for rubber, steel and oil. Retreading reduces CO2 emissions by 24% compared to producing a new tyre from scratch. It requires 19% less water and consumes less than half of the energy needed for making a new tyre.
It is also a more economical alternative with similar safety and performance characteristics to a new tyre, helping lower the cost for fleets and consumers. However, the sector faces several challenges such as lack of incentives, unfair competition due to imported tyres and low awareness of its environmental, social and economic benefits.
Motortec Debate
The Motortec and TNU debate aims to bring together industry experts and representatives from the EU and Spanish governments, as well as circular economy specialists who will discuss measures necessary to revitalise the retreading industry, ensuring its survival in the future.
Key topics for discussion include:
- The current situation of retreading in Spain and Europe
- The environmental and economic benefits of retreadding
- Business strategies to strengthen the sector
- Technological innovations transforming the sector
- Tax incentives and awareness-raising measures
- Urgent actions to stop the declining trends
The debate will conclude with a panel discussion open to attendees, where they can share their views and opinions to ensure a sustainable future for retreading in Europe.
