says Smart.
Smart also highlights the potential cost savings through the company’s experience.
“As an example we had two tyre blow- outs – on different vehicles – about 12 months ago now. These two incidents ended up costing us about £3,000.” Paul Smart is using one vehicle for the trial – a Scania G410 eight-
wheeler – but if the trial is successful the company “would put it on every vehicle and trailer in the fleet”.
“We will need to evaluate the TPMS for a six- month period. If a tyre incurs a puncture causing the tyre to deflate the driver
and our transport office would be notified immediately, allowing us to action a repair before the tyre fails
completely.”

demonstrations that he has seen of ContiPressureCheck at last year’s CV Show and the Hannover Motor Show. “I’m sure the system will pay for itself
Pirelli’s Carrier tyre came up trumps in a recent test conducted by Germany’s Promobil magazine: Germany’s oldest motor-home magazine.
During the test, the Carrier Camper, part of the Carrier tyre family, was
million kilometres of testing conducted with some of the leading European fleets. The Carrier guarantees a long tyre life with decreased fuel consumption thanks to a reduction in rolling resistance, better
performance in the wet and increased comfort compared to previous-generation tyres. With the Carrier, Pirelli expanded its range of commercial products, transferring the technology that has been developed for Ultra High Performance tyres through to the commercial vehicle sector. The Carrier was created using state-of-the-art design criteria, utilised successfully on Pirelli’s headlining products such as P Zero and Cinturato P7, but with increased emphasis on two key factors for the van market: safety and total life costs.
Following on from the successful launch of its Carrier tyre for light commercial vehicles, Pirelli has also revealed a winter version of the tyre designed to cope with
travel in difficult seasonal conditions. Pirelli’s Carrier Winter tyre guarantees optimal safety in cold weather, which is just as well given that a 2013 report by insurance group RSA estimated that cold weather-related problems could cost the UK economy as much as £470 million a day, based on the associated massive travel disruption.
compared to four tyres and was subjected to a series of challenges that included braking, roadholding and handling. It was declared test winner and was also acclaimed as ‘very recommendable.’
The original Pirelli Carrier tyre – a high-technology tyre developed specifically for vans – was revealed by Pirelli last summer following three

Tracey Hyem, Continental Tyres’ Commercial Marketing Manager said: “Continental Tyres is delighted to join forces with Verilocation, taking our ContiPressureCheck System to the next level with telematics integration and the ability to proactively communicate tyre pressure warnings
back to the fleet base. This partnership is a great
demonstration of our business looking to
enhance the system and support fleet managers and
drivers in identifying tyre-
related concerns in advance.”
Verilocation’s Managing Director
Andrew Overton says that the new partnership
with Continental has led to a much-needed product
that will enable fleets to boost efficiency and save fuel. “We’re
excited about this new partnership which brings together
two market leaders. Our aim is to save hard-pressed operators money by monitoring tyres in real time to prevent catastrophic and expensive blow-outs and tyre repair bills.”

Safety Award for ATS Euromaster
ATS Euromaster has increased its tally of safety accreditations and awards, adding an International Safety Award from the British Safety Council to its total. The accolade followed an assessment of ATS Euromaster’s Wishaw centre, which showed that there was a strong commitment to protecting the health and safety of both workers and customers. The company already holds accreditation Safecontractor and Contractors Health and Safety Scheme (CHAS)and is the only national tyre specialist to
be accredited with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Gold Award.
ATS Euromaster operates one of the largest fleets of mobile technicians in the UK and implements a number of schemes to ensure the company runs as safely as possible – including a ‘Safe by Choice’ programme, which promotes safety as a personal choice for staff.
Continental has joined forces with Verilocation to integrate its tyre pressure and temperature monitoring system, ContiPressureCheck, into the latter’s telematics system, in order to reduce tyre breakdowns, save fleet operators fuel and extend tyre life. Verilocation has now linked ContiPressureCheck to its onboard GPS tracking device, which sends this information to Verilocation’s web- based tracking account in real time. This new system allows tyre pressure information to be fed directly into a fleet’s own telematics system for the first time.
When pressure loss is identified in the tyre, a warning is sent to a nominated email address, while low and medium alerts also warn the driver, enabling him to find a safe place to pull over
and take corrective action, thereby preventing costly blowouts and saving vehicle downtime.
The Verilocation system also generates reports which fleet managers can use to ensure that tyre pressures are kept at optimum levels, which helps save on fuel and ensures that tyres last longer.
Bristol-based Paul Smart Transport, which has the product on trial, runs a fleet of 30 bulk tippers, all involved in the distribution of aggregates, asphalt, animal feeds and agricultural products throughout the UK. Managing Director Paul Smart already uses Verilocation’s tracking and telematics system and Driver ID. He has high expectations about being able to incorporate tyre pressure monitoring into this information suite and its impact on
